My Rating
Rating: 4 out of 5.
Taking the level of crazy to a whole new level. What in the world was that?
Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica offers one hell of a ride. The prologue is about a husband and wife being unfaithful to each other and obviously one would expect a domestic psychological thriller which is all the rage nowadays and reading so many of them means everyone in my family is under my suspicious lens.. ha…ha…
After that prologue, comes the revolting scenes involving abuse of children, NOPE, they do not make you puke, Mary Kubica had written it excellently where the focus of the reader is with the children to find a way out rather than what they are enduring, and of course, the pulse pounding action follows and I was made to scream GO..GO..GO…
Then the story takes a 360-degree turn alternating between different POVs and different timelines which can be easily followed. Again, impressive writing by the author shows one part of the mystery unraveling thru the young brother Leo. It is here where the author provides all the chills of the abuse and their suffering but loved the fact that it was not in first person POV coz I do not know how I would have managed to sleep through the night after reading that.
The mystery is intense, connecting several lives and varied subjects, a father and a husband grieving for his lost family, a son growing up in the shadow of a tragedy that has struck his family, and a neighbor who is invested in helping to untangle the puzzle and takes upon herself to conduct an investigation, the different facets of motherhood, the whole upheaval in a woman’s life during pregnancy. There is a subtle nod to all women who go thru child-birth and Mary Kubica has captured the different emotions of a new mother-to-be amazingly well. The ending, though let me down, it was not the plausible conclusion to the absorbing thriller that I had expected but coz the story was riveting through and through, I was able to roll with it.
A fast-paced unputdownable thriller, Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica would make you read late into the night.
People don’t just disappear without a trace…
Shelby Tebow is the first to go missing. Not long after, Meredith Dickey and her six-year-old daughter, Delilah, vanish just blocks away from where Shelby was last seen, striking fear into their once-peaceful community. Are these incidents connected? After an elusive search that yields more questions than answers, the case eventually goes cold.
Now, eleven years later, Delilah shockingly returns. Everyone wants to know what happened to her, but no one is prepared for what they’ll find…
In this smart and chilling thriller, master of suspense and New York Times bestselling author Mary Kubica takes domestic secrets to a whole new level, showing that some people will stop at nothing to keep the truth buried.
