One Step Too Far (Frankie Elkin #2) by Lisa Gardner #BookReview #MysteryThriller #Adventure #OneStepTooFar #Suspense — Rain’n’books

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner, a thrilling new novel that sends Frankie Elkin into the woods in search of a lost man-and the shocking truth about why he went missing in the first place.

Frankie Elkin, who readers first met in Before She Disappeared, learns of a young man who has gone missing in a national forest. Law enforcement has abandoned the search, but a crew of people led by the young man’s father are still looking. Sensing a father’s desperation, Frankie agrees to help-but soon sees that a missing person isn’t all that’s wrong here. And when more people start to vanish, Frankie realizes she’s up against something very dark-and she’s running out of time.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Book Review

I Know I know… Lisa Gardner may probably write garbage but I would still gobble it up and give it 5 stars. After having read all her published works, it is amazing how much she manages to surprise me even now. And more often than not, I always have mixed feelings reading them, extremely happy that there’s a new experience coming up but at the same time feeling immensely sad that the story will end.

Compelling takes a new meaning in the latest adventure thriller in Frankie Elkin’s series. Book #2 One Step Too Far is perfectly good to be read as a standalone as the author does highlight one of the major traumatic incidents in Frankie’s life but I would strongly recommend reading them in order so that you wouldn’t miss out on the small tidbits of the protagonist’s life and the slight changes to the characterization and growth as the series progresses.

Frankie Elkin is a missing person expert, arriving at the scene after the whole world has forgotten about them. A recovering alcoholic, she lives like a nomad never settling down, moving from one case to another as her whim takes her. It was an impulsive action that made her travel to Wyoming and interfere in a father’s final attempt to bring his missing son home. What follows is Lisa Gardner at her best, an avid hiker herself, she uses her expertise in getting the reader to experience the thrill of the hike and the wilderness that holds everyone in thrall. It is one of her exceptional talents in once again getting me to forget the outside world and walk in the footsteps of her protagonist confronting all the trauma and dangers of the wilds.

There’s a subtle change to the character of Frankie from the first book, we see her as more vulnerable unaccustomed to being out in the open, and conducting her investigation with a team of eight that seems broken from the word go. There are plenty of secrets that are waiting to be unearthed but thankfully they were not so earth-shattering as the usual types of reveals that the author always springs on the reader.

I am absolutely glad that Lisa Gardner decided Frankie Elkin be a series coz honestly Frankie grows on you and one can’t help but be thankful for real people like her who volunteer to sacrifice a part of their soul for such traumatic work and of course, Daisy, YOU HAVE MY HEART!

I’m writing this review watching the live coverage of a rescue mission of a hiker in Kerala in India, who with sheer miracle survived an ordeal for more than 45 hours without food or water, something similar to James Franco’s movie 127 hours. So here’s me SALUTING The INDIAN ARMY AND ALL THE VOLUNTEERS who refused to give up and achieved what till then seemed impossible.
