After a long time, The Lost Village by Camilla Sten became that one book that I added to my ‘ALL-TIME FAVORITE LIST” last year, and truth be told I was a little hesitant going in to read The Resting Place. There has been many a time when my own over-the-top expectation has spoiled my reading fun but I needn’t have worried as The Resting Place reinforced the belief that Camilla Sten is definitely gonna be in the auto-buy category for me.
Back-to-back books about prosopagnosia or face blindness, I have the utmost respect for all who suffer from this neurological disorder. The terror and anxiety of having to live being half-blind all your life unable to recognize the faces of your loved ones including your own is unimaginable and in The Resting Place, the author has used this disorder, though mildly, to exacerbate an already tense situation.
Eleanor discovers the existence of a summer house called Solhoga only after the brutal murder of her grandmother Vivienne. Traveling there with her boyfriend Sebastian after being informed by her lawyer for an inventory, Eleanor discovers that the Solhoga hides dark and impenetrable truths. Her aunt Veronika also reaches Solhoga, her family home believing her mother Vivienne to have sold it years back. Their arrival is of course met with harmful incidents that threaten Eleanor’s sanity and the absence of the mysterious caretaker builds on the thrill. The forbidding atmosphere of the place added with violent weather conditions provides a claustrophobic effect and this is something that the author excels in, the setting of the story becomes a character by itself thru the author’s fantastic writing.
The past timeline of the story that progresses thru the maid Anushka explains the background of the events that culminate in all the hidden secrets of the present but the pacing of the story lacks a punch towards the end. I expected the tension to reach a fever pitch but that was clearly missing at the climax when the murderer is unveiled.
